This great tree has recently taken the streets by storm, not only because it's narrow and upright in youth, but because it tolerates those difficult urban conditions, such as pollution and a wide range of soil types. Pyramidal European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata') has a distinctly crisp outline that is good for screening, single specimen or groupings, and as an allée along a street - very versatile. 'Fastigiata' can also be made into a hedge because it withstands shearing and heavy pruning. Definitely a tree with diverse potential!
